Was it just me that didn't get the ending? The movie was beautiful and an interesting story but what happened to her grandson at the end?

Loved the film, great start to the season. I thought the photography was fabulous, very operatic. Tilda Swinton was great, I loved her pause in the hall before she vanished at the end, she looked like a deer in the headlights. Her sense of being trapped in that sterile house was haunting.

I thought it was a brilliant film which encompassed the complexities of life in its myriad of bitter sweet joys and sadness.
Please may I also say thank you to everyone for being so welcoming - this was my first film with the Society and it was so nice to be welcomed. Thanks!

I picked up on the shoe thing as well, both tenderly carried out but with different connotations. I loved the moments that depicted Emmas intense internalising - whilst eating, whilst walking, whilst experiencing intense grief - it made the film an incredibly vivid and real personal journey, as well as putting her outside of the family sphere.

Like Ollie, I wasn't sure of the film when I first heard of it, but now I want to shout out about it everywhere - everyone should see it.

I thought the intense sensuality that Emma experienced when eating or visiting the countryside was brilliantly conveyed in the use of image, colour and especially sound. I can still hear the crickets buzzing in the hazy heat.

The repeated motif of Emma's shoes was also powerfully symbolic. At first we see her lover, Antonio, slipping off her lightweight sandals, which are already more open than her city attire, and thereby setting her free. Later, after her son's funeral, her husband puts her black heels back on, caging her back into the role she must play within the family drama.

For some reason I was unsure about this film but always happy to be proved wrong. I can't think of any films that Tilda Swinton has been in that are just OK or run of the mill. Great subtly in the moments that were pivotal in the film with some of the most sumptuous cinematography I've seen. What a brilliant start to the season.

Tilda was certainly both steamy and detached - quite a performance.
Discussed film for long while and big debate about whether Edouardo was homosexual or not was probably a wrong tack and red herring.
This film was about "belonging" Tilda although married into the family was there to serve not to be part of the dynasty. Only when I got this did the fact that poor old Edouardo's wife was left stood alone in the hospital and was not called in by the surgeon to find out the fate of the father of her child make sense. The Rechi's were a very exclusive club.
Best moment for me was - if your wife is not part of the team - get your jacket back - I'm sure other people had their own highlights?
Great start to the season what do you think?
