Everybody loves film. Winchester loves festivals. It’s about time somebody organised a
Winchester Film Festival! And who better than Winchester Film Society?
Since 1976 we have been
showcasing the best of world cinema at a succession of venues around the city. To mark our 30th
anniversary, we decided to celebrate in style by putting together this four-day festival
featuring a selection of the best world and UK independent films - from short films by students
and locally based directors to international award-winning films.
The film festival will take place across five venues:
- We are delighted to start and finish with
special previews of Zidane and Man Push Cart at The Screen Cinema - Winchester Film
Society’s home since 1998.
- We are offering a rare cinematic outing for McLibel at Peter Symonds College,
together with some shorts made by students at the college.
- We are showing two half hour Hampshire films
from 1925 & 1977 at Wessex Film & Sound Archive.
- We present a sparkling double-bill of music
documentaries at The Tower Arts Centre,
- And at The Guildhall, we showcase a triple-bill of world
cinema films that never got the UK theatrical releases they so richly deserved.
If the festival is a success, we hope to make it a permanent addition to Winchester and
Hampshire’s cultural calendar. Hopefully you can join us at one or two of the festival’s
screenings, and if you can’t wait a year or so for the next dose, you may want to try our
regular fortnightly screenings at The Screen starting again on 10 October.
Enjoy!
