Nine-year-old Lamia is selected to bake the school birthday cake for Saddam Hussein, in a government-mandated task that was a reality for families across Iraq from the mid-1980s until the fall of the Ba’ath Party in 2003. Together with grandmother Bibi, best friend Saeed and pet cockerel Hindi, Lamia must beg, borrow and steal the ingredients she needs.
